An aerosol-generating system is provided, including: a DC power supply to generate a DC supply voltage; and control circuitry to control a supply of electrical power from the power supply to a heater to aerosolize a liquid aerosol-forming substrate, the control circuitry including: a DC/DC voltage converter to receive the supply voltage as an input and to output an output voltage to power the heater, and a controller to control the voltage converter to adjust the output voltage based on a predetermined power profile for the heater, the profile including: a first time period of a user puff during which a substantially constant first power value is supplied to the heater, and a second time period of the user puff after the first time period during which a substantially constant second power value is supplied to the heater, and the second power value being less than the first power value.
