Bacteria-responsive particles and a platform for product packaging or for incorporating on surfaces are described, together with uses thereof and methods of preparation. The particles, such as liposomes or lipid nanoparticles, provide a bacteria-responsive platform for release of an agent, which may be antimicrobial, only in the presence of the target bacteria upon release of virulence factors referred to as cholesterol-dependent cytolysins (CDCs) by the bacteria. Common bacteria involved in food poisoning, such as bacillus, Clostridium, listeria, and streptococcus, produce CDCs and can be targeted with the particles described. The particles are cholesterol-rich, and comprise surface-exposed cholesterol. The releasable agent is encapsulated within the particles. Interaction of the surface-exposed cholesterol with the CDC released from the target bacteria causes particle porosity and release of the agent encapsulated within the particles, permitting the agent to take effect, such as to deter the target bacteria or indicate its presence.
Bacteria-responsive particles encapsulating a releasable agent for interaction with a target bacteria that releases a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC), said particles comprising:
