Abstract
Provided are systems and methods for increasing nutrient content in plant based livestock feed sources through the administration of UV light to plant seed.
Claims114
A method of increasing the performance of a plant, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant, wherein the performance is measured by total lipid percentage, metabolizable energy, non-structural carbohydrates, crude fat concentration, forage biomass, tiller number, or shoot fresh weight.
A method of increasing total lipid percentage in a plant, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing the total lipid percentage in a field for grazing, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plurality of plant seeds, 2) sowing the plurality of plant seeds in the field, and 3) growing plants from the plurality of plant seeds.
A method of increasing metabolizable energy in a plant, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing non-structural carbohydrates in a plant, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing crude fat concentration in a plant, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing forage biomass in a grass, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing tiller number in a grass, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing fresh weight in a grass, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing the plant from the plant seed, and 4) harvesting the plant.
A method of increasing the total energy content per unit of feed consumed by an animal, the method comprising 1) administering UV-B light to a plurality of plant seeds, 2) sowing the plurality of plant seeds in a field, 3) growing plant from the plurality of plant seeds, and 4) feeding the animals the feed.
A method of decreasing an area of field required for feeding animals, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, 3) growing plant from the plant seed, and 4) grazing the animals on the field.
A method of reducing the methane production of animals, the method comprising 1) administering UV-B light to a plurality of plant seeds, 2) sowing the plurality of plant seeds in a field, 3) growing plants from the plant seeds, and 4) grazing the animals on the field or feeding the plants to the animals.
A method of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, the method comprising:
- 1) administering UV-B light to a plant seed, 2) sowing the plant seed, and 3) growing the plant from the plant seed.
A plant comprising an increased concentration of at least one lipid, wherein the plant does not comprise a transgenic gene.
A plant comprising an increased concentration of at least one lipid, wherein the plant comprises increased expression of an Oleosin (OLE) or diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) gene.
