A free-standing storage server designed for independent operation provides high-density data storage. The storage server includes a plurality of storage drives, a left backplane, a right backplane, and a backing plate. Each storage drive includes a device connector and a plurality of mounting holes. Disk receptacles of the left and right backplanes are mated with device connectors of respective storage drives. The left backplane is secured to a left surface of the backing plate, and the right backplane is secured to a right surface of the backing plate. A median plane equally bisects the backing plate and is equidistant from the left and right surfaces. Mounting holes of storage drives mated to the left backplane are bilaterally symmetrical about the median plane to corresponding mounting holes of storage drives mated to the right backplane.
