Dynamic context-aware network handover (dcanh)

A non-transitory machine-readable medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system of a mobile communications device including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:

• obtaining position data identifying a position of the mobile communications device;
• obtaining first operating characteristics associated with a base station of a cellular communications network, wherein the base station is in wireless communications with the mobile communications device, and wherein the wireless communications comprise control data over a control channel and data traffic over a traffic channel;
• scanning a Wi-Fi access point, wherein the scanning provides second operating characteristics associated with the Wi-Fi access point;
• determining, based at least in part upon the position data, the first operating characteristics, and the second operating characteristics, whether the mobile communications device is to handover from the base station to the Wi-Fi access point, wherein the handover comprises subsequent communications of data traffic between the mobile communications device and the Wi-Fi access point, and wherein the determining results in a determination;
• and
• responsive to the determination being that the mobile communications device is to handover from the base station to the Wi-Fi access point, initiating the handover of the mobile communications device from the base station to the Wi-Fi access point.

A method, comprising:

• obtaining, by a processing system of a base station including a processor, location data associated with a plurality of end-user mobile devices;
• obtaining, by the processing system, first operating parameters associated with wireless cellular communications between the base station and each of the end-user mobile devices;
• obtaining, by the processing system, second operating parameters associated with a plurality of access points of a non-cellular wireless communications network;
• selecting by the processing system, based at least in part upon the location data, the first operating parameters, and the second operating parameters, a first one of the plurality of access points to which a first one of the end-user mobile devices is to handover;
• selecting by the processing system, based at least in part upon the location data, the first operating parameters, and the second operating parameters, a second one of the plurality of access points to which a second one of the end-user mobile devices is to handover;
• transmitting, by the processing system, a first handover recommendation to the first one of the end-user mobile devices, wherein the first handover recommendation identifies the first one of the plurality of access points;
• and
• transmitting, by the processing system, a second handover recommendation to the second one of the end-user mobile devices, wherein the second handover recommendation identifies the second one of the plurality of access points.
