Abstract
Systems and methods are described for correcting rolling shutter effect for images captured by a camera. In some embodiments, an adjustable transparency layer is placed between an image sensor and a camera lens, where the adjustable transparency layer is controlled to become transparent and then opaque in order to produce a single concurrent effective exposure time, reducing rolling shutter effect.

A method for mitigating rolling shutter effect for an image captured by a camera, the method comprising:
- initiating a capture of the image by the camera, wherein the camera comprises an image sensor and an adjustable transparency layer, and wherein:
- the image sensor comprises a first sensor portion and a second sensor portion;
- the first sensor portion is configured to record incoming light during a first exposure interval comprising a first exposure start time and a first exposure stop time;
- and
- the second sensor portion is configured to record incoming light during a second exposure interval comprising a second exposure start time and a second exposure stop time;
- and
- comparing a first readout time of the first sensor portion to a second readout time of the second sensor portion;
- based at least in part on the comparison, determining that the first readout time or the second readout time corresponds to an earliest readout time;
- and
- adjusting a transparency level of the adjustable transparency layer of the camera, to modify at least one of the first exposure stop time or the second exposure stop time, wherein the at least one modified first exposure stop time or modified second exposure stop time occurs no later than the earliest readout time.
A device for mitigating rolling shutter effect for a captured image, comprising:
- an adjustable transparency layer;
- an image sensor comprising a first sensor portion and a second sensor portion, wherein:
- the first sensor portion is configured to record incoming light during a first exposure interval comprising a first exposure start time and a first exposure stop time;
- and
- the second sensor portion is configured to record incoming light during a second exposure interval comprising a second exposure start time and a second exposure stop time;
- control circuitry configured to:
- initiate a capture of the image by the device;
- compare a first readout time of the first sensor portion to a second readout time of the second sensor portion;
- based at least in part on the comparison, determining that the first readout time or the second readout time corresponds to an earliest readout time;
- and
- adjusting a transparency level of the adjustable transparency layer, to modify at least one of the first exposure stop time or the second exposure stop time, wherein the at least one modified first exposure stop time or modified second exposure stop time occurs no later than the earliest readout time.
