In a motor driving device and a method of controlling the same to determine a driving mode of a motor in consideration of the temperature of a switch that switches the driving mode, the motor driving device includes a motor including a plurality of windings, a first inverter connected to a first end of each of the windings, a second inverter connected to a second end of each of the windings, a mode switch including a plurality of switching elements, ends of one side of each of the switching elements being interconnected, opposite ends of the switching elements being connected to the second ends of the windings, and a controller configured to determine a driving mode of the motor based on an operating parameter value of the motor and a temperature of the mode switch and to control the switching elements based on the determined driving mode.
