A charge detection mass spectrometer (CDMS) is provided. The CDMS includes an electrostatic sector field ion trap and an inductive charge detector. The electrostatic sector field ion trap includes a set of electrostatic sectors including a first electrostatic sector and a second electrostatic sector spaced apart to define a field-free region along an ion path. The inductive charge detector is positioned within the field-free region such that ions traveling along the ion path pass through the inductive charge detector. The electrostatic sector field ion trap is configured to guide ions along the ion path through the inductive charge detector. Ions are maintained at a substantially constant speed while traversing the ion path, enabling charge detection during repeated passages through the field-free region. A method of determining masses of ions using a charge detection mass spectrometer is also provided.
