Medication disposal systems and methods of use thereof

A computer-implemented method for managing wasting of a medication by a user, the method comprising:

• (a) determining an identity of the medication based at least in part on an identifier provided on a packaging of the medication;
• (b) generating, via an optical sensor operatively coupled to a waste collection unit, sensor data associated with at least a portion of the medication that is wasted to the waste collection unit, wherein the sensor data comprises electromagnetic spectroscopy data;
• (c) determining, based at least in part on the sensor data, at least one of an identity of the wasted medication or an amount of the wasted medication;
• (d) comparing the identity of the medication in (a) with the identity or amount of the wasted medication that is determined in (c);
• (e) and creating a record of the wasting of the medication to manage and track the wasting of the medication by the user to the waste collection unit.
