Abstract

An image forming apparatus includes a negatively charged photoreceptor, a charging device that charges a surface of the photoreceptor, has a charging member in contact with the photoreceptor, and applies only a direct-current voltage to the charging member, an exposure device that exposes the charged surface of the photoreceptor to form an electrostatic latent image, a developing device that develops the electrostatic latent image formed on the surface of the photoreceptor with a developer containing a toner to form a toner image, a transfer device that transfers the toner image to a surface of a recording medium, and a discharging device that, after the transfer of the toner image to the surface of the recording medium, discharges the surface of the photoreceptor by irradiating the surface of the photoreceptor with light, in which the photoreceptor has a conductive substrate, a charge generation layer disposed on the conductive substrate, a charge transport layer disposed on the charge generation layer, and a protective layer disposed on the charge transport layer, and a value of a ratio L/F of a total thickness L (μm) of the charge transport layer and the protective layer to a dielectric constant ε (F/m) of the entire charge transport layer and protective layer in a thickness direction is 4.0 or more and 6.0 or less, and in a case where the transfer device transfers the toner image to the surface of the recording medium, the photoreceptor is discharged such that the following expression (1) is satisfied at an exposed portion of the photoreceptor and the following expression (2) is satisfied at a non-exposed portion of the photoreceptor, 15%≤a surface potential of the photoreceptor after discharging by the transfer device/a surface potential of the photoreceptor after charging by the charging device≤20%,  the expression (1): 25%≤a surface potential of the photoreceptor after discharging by the transfer device/a surface potential of the photoreceptor after charging by the charging device≤50%,  the expression (2): provided that the surface potential of the photoreceptor is a negative potential after the charging by the charging device and is a negative potential even after the discharging by the transfer device.
