Image forming apparatus and method for fixing toner image to recording material

An image forming apparatus including a fixing device configured to fix a toner image to a recording material, the image forming apparatus comprising:

• a belt;
• a rotary member configured to pressurize the belt from an outer side of the belt;
• a nip portion forming member disposed on an inner side of the belt, configured to sandwich the belt with the rotary member;
• an internal heating roller disposed on the inner side of the belt and configured to heat the belt;
• an external heating roller configured to contact with an outer peripheral surface of the belt and heat the belt;
• a first detection unit configured to detect a temperature of the internal heating roller;
• a second detection unit configured to detect a temperature of the external heating roller;
• a first cleaning unit configured to clean the outer peripheral surface of the belt;
• a second cleaning unit configured to clean an outer peripheral surface of the external heating roller by a method different from a method used by the first cleaning unit;
• and
• a control unit configured to execute a cleaning mode in which toner adhering to the outer peripheral surface of the belt is removed after a jam of the recording material,
• wherein, in the cleaning mode, the control unit is configured to separate the second cleaning unit from the external heating roller, cause the first cleaning unit to clean the outer peripheral surface of the belt in a state in which the temperature of the external heating roller is higher than the temperature of the internal heating roller, and bring the second cleaning unit into contact with the external heating roller.
