Abstract

Optical interconnect assemblies, optical cable assemblies, and methods of assembly thereof are described. An example optical cable assembly includes a fiber optic cable and a coupling block positioned at one end of the cable. The coupling block includes upper and lower block surfaces, a window aperture that extends through the coupling block, a board recess formed in the lower block surface, a cable termination bay adjacent to the lower block surface, and cable passages that extend from the cable termination bay to the board recess. Optical fibers of the fiber optic cable extend along the cable channels and across or over the window aperture of the coupling block. The optical fibers can be accurately trimmed in length using one or more fiducial markers on the coupling block, and thermally expanded core processing techniques can be applied to the optical fibers or the ends of the optical fibers.
