Apparatus and method for compressing a gas such as hydrogen (H2) using a multi-stage compression assembly. A cylindrical compression stack has a bi-directional hydraulic actuator interconnected between first and second compression stages. Each compression stage includes a compression piston configured for reciprocating movement within a compression cylinder to provide a compression chamber. The compression pistons operate in tandem to successively compress a flow of gas to successively higher pressures as the gas flows from one compression chamber to the next. The compression pistons and cylinder sidewalls are sized to reduce the volume of the successive chambers while maintaining the stack with a uniform diameter, Multiple stacks may be cascaded together to provide continuous compression of the gas to a final pressure at a selected mass throughput rate. A dispenser can be used to transfer the pressurized gas to a pressurized tank, such as a fuel tank of a vehicle.
