According to an ignition method for this internal combustion engine, in igniting a gaseous fuel containing ammonia and hydrogen supplied to a combustion chamber by discharge produced by a spark plug of an ignition device, total discharge energy provided by the spark plug in one cycle including stages from a compression stroke to an expansion stroke in the combustion chamber of one cylinder is set to 600 mJ or more. This enables improvement in combustibility of the fuel containing ammonia even in a region in which an engine load to the internal combustion engine is low. Consequently, an amount of hydrogen used as a combustion improved can be reduced.
An ignition method for an internal combustion engine in which a gaseous fuel containing ammonia and hydrogen supplied to a combustion chamber is ignited by discharge produced by a spark plug of an ignition device, wherein total discharge energy provided by the spark plug in one cycle including stages from a compression stroke to an expansion stroke in the combustion chamber of one cylinder is 600 mJ or more.
