Abstract
A solids fallback protection device for use in a sucker rod pump (SRP) system having a rod string is provided. The device protects an SRP system from suspended solids in the fluid column by containing and storing these solids before they settle on the SRP system by utilizing a multitude storage chambers with a multitude slotted bases in each chamber; it also self-cleans these solids upon restarting of the SRP system, and provides a continuous fluid communication path through the device.
Claims5
A solids fallback protection device for use in a sucker rod pump (SRP) system having a rod string, comprising:
- a device housing positioned along a production tubing string,
- a storage tube with an inner volume defining a fluid flow pathway during pump operation and an outer volume,
- at least one storage chamber within the device housing, the storage chamber defined by the outer volume of the storage tube and the inner wall of the device housing, each storage chamber comprising:
- a plurality of communication ports on the storage tube for fluid and solids flow,
- a base having a plurality of slots configured to restrict the downward movement of solids,
- the device having a top end and a bottom end configured for in-line connection with the rod string,
- wherein the device housing and its internal components reciprocate in response to the motion of the discontinuous rod string,
- wherein, during fluid production stoppage, solids entering the device are guided by gravity into the storage chambers through the communication ports and accumulated in the annular space between the storage tube and device housing, and
- wherein, upon the resumption of fluid production, mobilized well fluid flows through the communication ports and slotted chamber bases, generating backpressure that dislodges and flushes the accumulated solids through the fluid flow path out of the device.
