Abstract
A quick-release connection between the inner tube and latch assembly of a wireline core retrieval system that makes use of a mechanical interference between a set of grippers and a groove rather than helical threads. The connection is comprised of a connector body, plungers, grippers, a spring, and an inner tube. A method of quickly connecting and disconnecting the inner tube from the latch assembly of a wireline core drilling system without the rotation required by a threaded joint.
Claims10
A quick-release inner tube connection for core retrieval during wireline core drilling, comprising:
- a connector housing;
- grippers within the connector housing providing mechanical interference with a groove in the inner tube;
- a plunger controlling the position of the grippers;
- a spring applying force on the plunger;
- and
- an inner tube with a groove to accept the grippers.
A method for connecting and disconnecting an inner tube from a latch assembly during wireline core drilling, comprising:
- depressing the plunger to retract the grippers;
- removing the inner tube from the latch assembly;
- releasing the force on the plunger;
- and
- removing the tool from the connector housing.
A quick-release inner tube connection system for core retrieval during wireline core drilling, comprising:
- means for extending and retracting grippers within a connector housing;
- means for controlling the position of the grippers;
- means for applying force on the controlling means;
- and
- an inner tube with a groove to accept the grippers.
