Abstract
An embodiment of a tool assembly includes a whipstock that is configured to be coupled to a running string. In addition, the tool assembly includes a hydraulic line extending through the whipstock. Further, the tool assembly includes an anchor including an anchor element that is configured to transition between a retracted position and an extended position. Still further, the tool assembly includes a booster sub coupled to the anchor and the whipstock. The booster sub is configured to boost a pressure communicated through the hydraulic line to transition the anchor element from the retracted position to the extended position.
Claims20
A tool assembly comprising:
- a whipstock that is configured to be coupled to a running string;
- a hydraulic line extending through the whipstock;
- an anchor including an anchor element that is configured to transition between a retracted position and an extended position;
- and
- a booster sub coupled to the anchor and the whipstock, where the booster sub is configured to boost a pressure communicated through the hydraulic line to transition the anchor element from the retracted position to the extended position.
A tool assembly comprising:
- a drill bit that is configured to be coupled to a running string;
- a whipstock coupled to the drill bit, where the whipstock includes a deflector plate that is configured to deflect the drill bit within a subterranean borehole;
- an anchor including an anchor element that is configured to transition between a retracted position and an extended position to secure the anchor within the subterranean borehole;
- and
- a booster sub coupled between the anchor and the whipstock, where the booster sub includes a booster piston that is movable under a first pressure communicated from the drill bit to apply a second pressure to the anchor to transition the anchor element from the retracted position to the extended position, where the second pressure is greater than the first pressure.
A method of performing a downhole operation by use of a tool assembly, the method comprising:
- applying a first pressure to a booster piston disposed in a booster sub of the tool assembly, the tool assembly also including a whipstock and an anchor;
- moving the booster piston within the booster sub by application of the first pressure to generate a second pressure, where the second pressure is greater than the first pressure;
- and
- applying the second pressure to the anchor to move an anchor element of the anchor from a retracted position to an extended position.
