A composite containing a plurality of particles interspersed within an elastomer, wherein the elastomer is an auxetic aligned nematic liquid crystal elastomer. Another composite contains first and second outer layers and an interlayer between the first and second outer layers, wherein the interlayer contains an auxetic aligned nematic liquid crystal elastomer.
