A method of treating or preventing a hearing disorder in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising (a) an antagonist against a family with sequence similarity 19, member A5 (FAM19A5) protein (FAM19A5 antagonist) and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier,

• wherein the FAM19A5 antagonist comprises (i) an antibody that specifically binds to FAM19A5 protein or an antigen binding fragment thereof (“anti FAM19A5 antibody”);
• (ii) a polynucleotide encoding the anti FAM19A5 antibody;
