Environmentally sustainable hydraulic cement and concrete compositions and methods for producing low carbon footprint hydraulic cement and concrete utilizing high percentages of industrial waste materials, particularly coal fly ash, with minimal or no Portland cement content are disclosed. The hydraulic cement compositions comprise high percentages of fly ash that may include Class C fly ash or blends primarily comprising Class C fly ash combined with activators and catalysts that enable the fly ash to hydrate and develop strength without the need for Portland cement or alkali activators. The resulting cement may exhibit a very low carbon footprint measured by the amount of CO2 per metric ton while achieving performance characteristics comparable to or exceeding those of conventional Portland cement concrete.
A hydraulic cement composition comprising:
A composition comprising an activator and catalyst for use in hydraulic cement, the composition comprising:
A method of producing a low carbon hydraulic cement comprising fly ash comprising at least 50 weight percent Class C fly ash, an activator comprising calcium sulfoaluminate cement, calcium aluminate cement, ground granulated blast furnace slag, anhydrite, ye′elimite or a combination thereof, and a catalyst comprising calcium oxide, lime kiln dust, dolomitic lime, calcium hydroxide or a combination thereof,
