Abstract
Industrial and residential water treatment systems and devices are disclosed for use in preventing hard water buildup or in removing such buildup. The systems and devices include fixed and removable components for delivering water treatment composition. In addition, novel water treatment compositions and methods of treating water are disclosed.

A method of softening water, comprising:
- dividing a water supply into a main stream and a subsidiary stream;
- directing the subsidiary stream into a water treatment device, the water treatment device comprising:
- a water treatment container formed to define a first compartment that stores a water treatment composition and a second compartment configured to store a water treatment solution;
- combining the subsidiary stream with the water treatment composition to produce the water treatment solution in the second compartment of the water treatment device;
- and
- combining the water treatment solution from the second compartment with the main stream outside the water treatment device at a controlled flow rate to treat the water supply with the water treatment solution.

A water treatment device for reducing hard water scaling, comprising:
- a water treatment container in fluid communication with a water supply to receive a subsidiary stream from a main stream of the water supply, the water treatment container formed to define a first compartment that stores a water treatment composition and a second compartment that stores a water treatment solution produced by combining the subsidiary stream and the water treatment composition from the first compartment, and
- a flow control device in fluid communication with the second compartment of the water treatment container and configured to control a flow rate of the water treatment solution from the second compartment to the main stream of the water supply to treat the water supply with the water treatment solution.
A water treatment device for reducing hard water scaling, comprising:
- a head portion;
- an inlet and an outlet in fluid connection with the head portion;
- and
- a water treatment container, operably connectable to the head portion, the water treatment container further comprising a cavity at least partially filled with a water treatment composition;
- wherein when the water treatment container is connected to the head portion, the inlet and the outlet are in fluid communication with the cavity through at least two openings in the inlet and a single opening in the outlet.
