A storage rack system has a pair of vertical columns defining a storage bay. A horizontal connecting beam connects the vertical columns and a top edge of the horizontal beam defines a horizontal plane. The rack includes a pair support rails. Each support rail has an upper pallet support surface for supporting a side edge of a pallet of goods and a lower pallet cart support surface for supporting the wheels of one side of a pallet transportation cart. The support rail can include a vertical lower apron wall extending downward from the cart support surface. In one embodiment of the invention, the lower apron extends below the horizontal plane defined by the horizontal connecting beam. This helps prevent the fork of a forklift from accidentally slipping behind the support rail. In other embodiments of the invention, gap covers can provide a similar benefit.
