A firewood splitting machine for splitting longitudinal timber sections to produce firewood pieces. A splitting tool is located in a third level spaced apart from a bottom surface of an operational area of the machine in a first level. The splitting chute is located in a fourth level disposed a distance above the ground that is smaller than a distance between a cutting blade of the splitting tool and the ground. The splitting chute and the splitting tool are simultaneously displaceable in the same direction along a horizontal axis and in vertical direction relative to the splitting tool and the bearing frame, either towards the ground or in the opposite direction, so that during displacing of the splitting tool and splitting chute, the distance between the splitting chute and the primary cutting blade of the splitting tool is all the time changeable within a pre-determined range.
