Abstract
An apparatus, for capturing carbon dioxide from a gas stream, includes: (a) a combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte, (b) a membrane chamber including a hydrophilic nanofiltration membrane adapted to act as a carbon dioxide absorber whereby upon contact, carbon dioxide from the gas stream reacts with the combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte, and (c) an electrochemical regenerator adapted to release captured carbon dioxide and regenerate the combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte. The apparatus is useful in a method of capturing carbon dioxide from a gas stream such as directly from the air.
Claims20
An apparatus for capturing carbon dioxide from a gas stream, comprising:
- a combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte;
- a membrane chamber including a hydrophilic nanofiltration membrane adapted to act as a carbon dioxide absorber whereby upon contact, carbon dioxide from the gas stream reacts with the combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte;
- and
- an electrochemical regenerator adapted to release captured carbon dioxide and regenerate the combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte.
A method of capturing carbon dioxide from a gas stream, comprising:
- absorbing carbon dioxide from a gas stream using a hydrophilic nanofiltration membrane by creating contact between the carbon dioxide and a combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte in a membrane chamber;
- reacting the carbon dioxide with hydroxide ions in the combined carbon dioxide absorbent and electrolyte to create carbonate ions in the solvent;
- and
- subsequently regenerating the hydroxide ions from the carbonate ions and releasing carbon dioxide.
