Abstract
An apheresis filter for removing heavy metal molecules from blood or plasma of a patient. The apheresis filter has a casing sized and configured for connection to an extracorporeal apheresis device, a macroparticle filtration membrane disposed within the casing; and a biomaterial retained within the filtration membrane. The casing has an inlet and an outlet for circulating blood or plasma therethrough. The biomaterial contains granulated or powdered egg membrane particles configured to adsorb heavy metal molecules from the blood or plasma by ion exchange, thereby retaining the heavy metal molecules within the filter.
Claims13
A therapeutic apheresis filter for eliminating residual platinum in from the blood of cancer patients after chemotherapy treatment, the therapeutic apheresis filter comprising:
- a casing that can be coupled to an extracorporeal apheresis device and having inlet and outlet openings for circulating therein blood or plasma extracted from a patient and delimiting a cavity containing a biomaterial;
- wherein the casing comprises two threaded caps, a macroparticle filtration membrane containing the biomaterial being housed inside it, the biomaterial being made up of granulated or powdered egg membrane particles, which by means of an ion exchange creates a bond that favors the adsorption union between the platinum molecules and the egg membrane particles making up the biomaterial, and the retention of the platinum molecules inside the filter.

An apheresis filter for removing heavy metal molecules from blood or plasma of a patient, comprising:
- a casing sized and configured for connection to an extracorporeal apheresis device, the casing having an inlet and an outlet for circulating blood or plasma therethrough;
- a macroparticle filtration membrane disposed within the casing;
- and
- a biomaterial retained within the filtration membrane, the biomaterial comprising granulated or powdered egg membrane particles configured to adsorb heavy metal molecules from the blood or plasma by ion exchange, thereby retaining the heavy metal molecules within the filter.
A method for removing heavy metal molecules from blood or plasma of a patient, comprising:
- (a) withdrawing blood or plasma from the patient;
- (b) passing the blood or plasma through an apheresis filter comprising:
- (i) a casing sized and configured for connection to an extracorporeal apheresis device, the casing having an inlet and an outlet for circulating the blood or plasma therethrough;
- (ii) a macroparticle filtration membrane disposed within the casing;
- and
- (iii) a biomaterial retained within the filtration membrane, the biomaterial comprising granulated or powdered egg membrane particles configured to adsorb heavy metal molecules from the blood or plasma by ion exchange, thereby retaining the heavy metal molecules within the filter;
- and
- (c) returning the treated blood or plasma to the patient.
