Abstract
A vitreous humor tamponade for the posterior cavity in the eye, including at least one structurally asymmetric fluorinated ether which is a liquid during room temperature or operative conditions and which can, after placement into the eye, change into gas as a result of its native vapor pressure or via external non-invasive methods. Such a compound also has a specific gravity between 1.1 and 1.6 (the latter being an upper bound to prevent retinal toxicity), is immiscible in water, is non-combustible, has high ultrasonic absorption capabilities, and is clear and colorless, in addition to the requirement described above.
Claims31
A retinal tamponade agent comprising a structurally asymmetric partially fluorinated ether having Structure 1:
- wherein m is 0, 1, or 2, or 3;
- a is 0, 1, or 2;
- x is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6;
- n is 1 or 2, b is 1 or 2;
