A hydraulic dampener includes a piston-cylinder arrangement in fluid communication with a valve assembly. The valve assembly includes a valve spool with one or more valve spool ports, which is rotatably housed in a valve sleeve having one or more valve sleeve ports. The outer surface of the valve spool includes a plurality of axial grooves disposed between the valve spool ports that capture hydraulic fluid as it flows into the valve assembly and generate a thin film of hydraulic fluid around the outer surface of the valve spool to aid the rotation of the valve spool within the valve sleeve. A hydraulic resistance of the hydraulic valve assembly varies approximately exponentially with a change in valve position caused by rotating the valve spool relative to the valve sleeve to vary an alignment between the one or more valve core ports and one or more valve sleeve ports.
