Abstract
A spacer for separating bones of a joint, the spacer includes a first endplate configured to engage a first bone of the joint; a second endplate configured to engage a second bone of the joint; tissue engaging projections, wherein the tissue engaging projections are moveable from a retracted position to a deployed position; and an actuation subassembly that extends between the first endplate and the second endplate, wherein the actuation subassembly comprise a drive nut, a drive screw coupled to the drive nut, and a cam frame coupled to the drive screw, wherein the cam frame is disposed between the first endplate and the second endplate to engage the tissue engaging projections.
Claims20
A method of fusing adjacent bony surfaces, comprising:
- inserting a spacer between the bony surfaces of a joint, wherein the spacer includes:
- a first endplate configured to engage a first bone of the joint;
- a second endplate configured to engage a second bone of the joint;
- a pivot housing pivotally coupled to the first endplate;
- and a plurality of spikes configured to be moveable from a retracted position to a deployed position, each spike including a deployment guide;
- a cam frame disposed between the first endplate and the second endplate, and configured to translate relative to the first and second endplates, the cam frame having a plurality of complementary deployment guides coupled to corresponding deployment guides of the spikes;
- and pivoting the inserted endplates between the bony surfaces relative to the pivot housing;
- and translating the cam frame of the pivoted endplates to move the spikes to the deployed position.
A method for separating bones of a joint, comprising:
- inserting a spacer between the bones of the joint, the spacer including:
- a first endplate configured to engage a first bone of the joint;
- a second endplate configured to engage a second bone of the joint;
- a pivot housing pivotally coupled to the first endplate;
- a plurality of spikes, wherein each spike includes an elongated body portion and a deployment guide that extends at an angle with respect to the elongated body, wherein the elongated body portion includes a tissue engaging end, wherein the spikes are moveable from a retracted position to a deployed position;
- and an actuation subassembly that extends between the first endplate and the second endplate, wherein the actuation subassembly comprises:
- a drive nut including a head portion and an extension from the head portion, wherein the extension is secured in a cutout formed by the first endplate and the second endplate;
- a drive screw including a threaded end that is threadingly coupled to a through bore of the drive nut;
- and a cam frame including a proximal frame end, a distal frame end, and lateral frame sides, wherein complimentary deployment guides that engage the corresponding deployment guides are formed in the lateral frame sides, wherein the complimentary deployment guides are at an angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the spacer, wherein the drive screw is retained in an opening in the proximal frame end,;
- pivoting the inserted endplates between the bony surfaces relative to the pivot housing;
- and translating the cam frame of the pivoted endplates to move the spikes to the deployed position.
