Abstract
An aspiration catheter has an expandable distal region including an expandable membrane scaffold configured to radially expand to enhance aspiration when a negative pressure is applied to a proximal end of the catheter. The expandable distal region may be formed continuously with a catheter body having a guidewire port formed in a sidewall. Alternatively, the expandable distal region may be carried at a distal end of a locating rod to allow positioning and expansion within a separately formed catheter body.
Claims34
An aspiration catheter comprising:
- a tubular catheter body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween;
- a distal tip structure comprising:
- (a) an elongate rod having a proximal end and a distal end;
- and
- (b) an expandable segment coupled to the distal end of the elongate rod, wherein the expandable segment includes an expandable membrane and a supporting scaffold configured to radially expand the expandable member;
- wherein the distal tip structure is configured to be advanced distally through the lumen of the tubular catheter body to overlap the expandable segment with the distal end of the tubular catheter body so that a seal is formed when the expandable segment is expanded in the distal end of the tubular catheter.
A distal tip structure for use in combination with a tubular catheter body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending there between to form an aspiration catheter, the distal tip structure comprising:
- (a) an elongate rod having a proximal end and a distal end;
- and
- (b) an expandable segment coupled, disposed, or attached to or embedded within the distal end of the elongate rod of the tubular catheter body and having a central passage with a proximal opening and a distal opening, wherein the expandable segment includes an expandable membrane and a supporting scaffold configured to radially expand the expandable member;
- wherein the distal tip structure is configured to be advanced distally through the lumen of the tubular catheter body to overlap the expandable segment with the distal end of the tubular catheter body so that a seal is formed when the expandable segment is expanded in the distal end of the tubular catheter.
An aspiration catheter comprising:
- a tubular catheter body having a proximal end, a distal end, and an aspiration lumen having a distal port and a proximal port extending therebetween;
- and
- an expandable segment coupled, disposed, or attached to or embedded within the distal end of the tubular catheter body and having a central passage contiguous with the aspiration lumen of the tubular catheter body, wherein the expandable segment includes an expandable membrane and a supporting scaffold configured to radially expand the expandable membrane;
- wherein the tubular catheter body has a guidewire entry port formed through a wall of the catheter body and located from 2 cm to 50 cm proximal of the distal end of the tubular catheter body.
A method for aspirating clot from a patient's vasculature, the method comprising:
- positioning a distal tip of an aspiration catheter in the patient's vasculature proximate a region of a clot;
- advancing an expandable distal tip extension through a lumen of the aspiration catheter to extend beyond and overlap with the distal tip of the aspiration catheter;
- expanding the expandable distal tip extension to engage a vascular wall adjacent the region of the clot and to form a seal with the distal end of the aspiration catheter;
- and
- applying a negative pressure to a proximal end of the lumen of the aspiration catheter to aspirate the clot through the expanded expandable distal tip extension and into a central passage of the expanded expandable distal tip extension.
