A felling head with autonomous stump treatment system having a saw head that can automatically apply a herbicide to a tree stump when it detects that its saw blade is cutting a tree. The saw head can include a motor coupled to the saw blade, a sensor that monitors a current rotational speed of a drive shaft that couples the motor to the saw blade, and a controller actuated dispenser for dispensing a herbicidal fluid. The saw head can be coupled to a controller that is configured to monitor a signal from the sensor and determine a difference between a target speed of the drive shaft and a current speed of the drive shaft. The controller can actuate the dispenser and apply the herbicidal fluid to a tree stump when the current speed difference reaches a threshold value.
