The telematics device includes a press button release lock mechanism to allow removal from its cradle and allow possible remote power charging, and a method of notification if the telematics device is removed from the cradle and placed back in the cradle, including a method to disable certain features in the telematics device firmware to conserve power and indicate a tamper alert during removal. Further described is a frame suitable for holding a telematics device that is designed to be attached to a vehicle window, and allow part or parts of the frame to deform away in the event that force is used to take the frame away from the window, which then causes the telematics solar cell to open and create a tamper alert, and send the tamper alert to the insurance company via the mobile network.
