Abstract

An example method for encoding a mesh includes receiving a mesh with polygons representing a surface of an object and detecting a symmetric region in the mesh. The method also includes determining a symmetry plane to divide the symmetric region into a first partition and a second partition, where vertices of the first partition have a one-to-one correspondence with vertices of the second partition via the symmetry plane. The method further includes determining a displacement between a vertex of the first partition and a corresponding vertex of the second partition, and compressing information about the first partition, the symmetry plane, and the displacement into a bitstream.
