Embodiments herein relate to diagnosis of eye diseases by estimating individualized baseline Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) or OCT angiography (OCTA) characteristics of the eye using deep learning that takes into account individual ocular characteristics. A difference between the baseline characteristics and measured characteristics indicates whether disease is present. An example implementation uses nerve fiber layer thickness (NFLT) to detect glaucoma. In a set of healthy eyes, circumpapillary NFLT profiles and vascular patterns were measured using OCT. Generative deep learning AI models were trained to reconstruct the individualized baseline NFLT, a customized normal reference based on each eye's own vascular pattern, axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error, disc size, and individual demography information. Two deep learning models were developed. A first (MAG) model used actual AL and SE, while a second (REG) model estimated AL and SE using vascular pattern as input.
