Abstract
A roofing shingle exhibits improved wind performance when installed near a bottom of a roof deck, owing to the inclusion of a reinforcing member and/or sealant. The roofing shingle can contribute to improved wind resistance of a roofing system.

A starter shingle for installation on a roof deck, the starter shingle comprising at least one layer of an asphalt-coated substrate, wherein the starter shingle has a front side intended to face away from the roof deck when installed thereon and a back side intended to face toward the roof deck when installed thereon;
- and wherein the front side of the starter shingle includes a reinforcement member that is parallel to an edge of the starter shingle.
A starter shingle for installation on a roof deck, the starter shingle comprising at least one layer of an asphalt-coated substrate, wherein the starter shingle has a front side intended to face away from the roof deck when installed thereon and a back side intended to face toward the roof deck when installed thereon;
- wherein the front side of the starter shingle includes a reinforcement member that is in proximity to and parallel to a first edge of the starter shingle;
- wherein the front side of the starter shingle includes a strip of a sealant material that is situated between the reinforcement member and the first edge and that is parallel to the first edge;
- and wherein the back side of the starter shingle includes a release tape that is in proximity to and parallel to a second edge of the starter shingle.
