A method for producing a carbon fiber precursor fiber includes using, as a spinning dope, an acrylonitrile-based polymer that is configured such that the area ratio (B/A) between a peak area A in the range where the polystyrene equivalent molecular weight measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is 3,000,000 or more and less than 5,000,000 and a peak area B in the range where the polystyrene equivalent molecular weight measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is 5,000,000 or more and 15,000,000 or less is 0.8 or more, and the area ratio (D/C) between a peak area C in the range where the polystyrene equivalent molecular weight measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is less than 3,000,000 and a peak area D in the range where the polystyrene equivalent molecular weight measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is 3,000,000 or more and 15,000,000 or less is 0.025 or less.
