The illuminating device includes a passive lighting element which defines an outer lighting surface having a light-emission direction; and at least two light sources which can be switched differently; wherein a first light source shines through the lighting element in the light-emission direction for illumination, and wherein, in order to define the lighting surface, the lighting element is translucent in the light-emission direction in at least one region defining a first lighting pattern and is reflective in at least one region defining a second lighting pattern. A second light source is provided for illuminating the outside of the lighting element such that light from the second light source that hits the lighting element from the outside is reflected in the light-emission direction by the reflective region.
