Abstract
A system and method is claimed for mechanically ventilating a patient including a breath delivery system. The system includes at least one airway sensor and a computing means, wherein the breath delivery system provides a flow of gas to the patient, the airway sensor measures pressure and flow of the gas leaving the patient. The computing means calculates an expiratory time constant. The breath delivery system provides PEEP to the patient, wherein the computing means determines a PEEP level or range of values based on an evaluation of the expiratory time constant or functions of the expiratory time constant at several PEEP levels.
Claims33
A system for mechanically ventilating a patient comprising:
- a breath delivery system;
- at least one airway sensor;
- and
- a computing means, wherein the breath delivery system provides a flow of gas to the patient, the at least one airway sensor measures pressure and flow of the gas leaving the patient, the computing means calculates an expiratory time constant, and the computing means evaluates lung recruitability of the patient using the expiratory time constant (RCEXP)
- wherein a PEEP level provided to the patient is automatically modified by the system to span a range of PEEP levels.

- a computing means, wherein the breath delivery system provides a flow of gas to the patient, the at least one airway sensor measures pressure and flow of the gas leaving the patient, the computing means calculates an expiratory time constant, and the computing means evaluates lung homogeneity of the patient using the expiratory time constant;
- wherein the breath delivery system provides PEEP to the patient and wherein the computing means determines homogeneity of the lungs by evaluating a change in multiple variables or functions of the expiratory time constant at a range of PEEP levels.
