Abstract
Compositions comprising starch-acrylic polymers combined with elemental iodine are disclosed. The SAP-I compositions release non-toxic amounts of iodophor iodine in a sustained, controlled manner. Methods of formation and use of the compositions along with methods of creation and use of devices incorporating the compositions in a variety of healthcare and non-healthcare settings are set forth in detail herein.
Claims20
A method of forming an antimicrobial composition comprising elemental iodine coupled with a starch acrylic polymer having amylose wherein the elemental iodine is associated with the amylose through non-ionic attraction, wherein the composition is configured to release iodine in a sustained, controlled manner upon contact with an aqueous fluid comprising steps:
- mixing a dry starch acrylic polymer comprising amylose with dry powdered elemental iodine under moist conditions by adding water at a controlled rate sufficient to maintain dampness without causing premature swelling of the starch acrylic polymer;
- drying the starch acrylic polymer-iodine composition at a temperature not greater than 125 degrees Fahrenheit to form a dried starch acrylic polymer-iodine composition.
