Abstract
Methods and formulations to decrease bacterial loads in a neonate to prophylactically treat neonatal E. coli infection during pregnancy, comprising maternal administration of lactoferrin vaginally during the second half of pregnancy before birth of the neonate. Prophylactic vaginal formulations for maternal administration to decrease bacterial loads in a neonate and inhibit neonatal E. coli invasive infection including sepsis, comprising lactoferrin dispersed or suspended in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Use of lactoferrin to prepare maternal vaginal medicaments, and use of lactoferrin for maternal vaginal administration during the second half of pregnancy to prophylactically treat neonatal E. coli infection.
Claims20
A method of decreasing bacterial loads in a neonate to prophylactically treat neonatal E. coli infection during pregnancy, said method comprising:
- vaginally administering an effective amount of lactoferrin to a pregnant mammal during the second half of gestation and before birth of said neonate,
- wherein bacterial load of E. coli in said neonate is reduced after birth, as compared to an untreated control.
