A method for preventing or retarding degeneration of intervertebral disc at an intervertebral disc defect site of a mammal, said method comprising administering a mammalian cell transduced with an exogenous gene into the intervertebral disc defect site,
- wherein the exogenous gene encodes a protein having intervertebral disc regenerating function,
- wherein the protein is a TGF-β superfamily protein, and
- wherein the mammalian cell is a human embryonic kidney cell or epithelial cell.
A method for preventing or retarding degeneration of intervertebral disc at an intervertebral disc defect site of a mammal, said method comprising administering a composition into the intervertebral disc defect site,
- wherein the composition comprises:
- (a) a first mammalian cell transduced with an exogenous gene, said exogenous gene encoding a protein having intervertebral disc regenerating function;
- and
- (b) a second mammalian cell that is an unmodified mammalian connective tissue cell,
- wherein the protein is a TGF-β superfamily protein,
- wherein the first mammalian cell is a human embryonic kidney cell or epithelial cell, and
- wherein the second mammalian cell is a chondrocyte.
