Abstract
Prodrugs and methods for preventing and/or treating one or more symptoms of sickle cell diseases (SCD) or respiratory hypoxia by administering at least one of the compounds are provided. The compounds are prodrugs that are chemically modified to have high water solubility to be administered intravenously.

A prodrug compound having a formula
- wherein
- W, X, Y and Z are the same or different and are independently C or N,
- R1, R2, R3, and R4 are the same or different and independently F, Cl or H,
- A is NR6 or O, wherein R6 is suitable alkyl, substituted alkyl, heterocyclic or substituted aryl,
- R5 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, O-aryl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic,
- B is a polar group or a monosaccharide, and
- pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
A method of preventing or treating one or more acute symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD) in a subject in need thereof, comprising intravenously administering to the subject a therapeutically effective dose of a prodrug having a formula

- W, X, Y and Z are the same or different and are independently C or N, with the proviso that at least one of W, X, Y, and Z is N,
- R1, R2, R3, and R4 are the same or different and independently F, Cl or H,
- A is NR6 or O, wherein R6 is suitable alkyl, substituted alkyl, heterocyclic or substituted aryl,
- R5 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, O-aryl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic,
- B is a polar group or a monosaccharide, and
- pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
A method of preventing or treating respiratory hypoxia in a subject in need thereof, comprising intravenously administering to the subject a therapeutically effective dose of a prodrug having a formula
