Abstract
Methods and apparatuses for blood clot aspiration. Described are fluid management components and assemblies for blood clot extraction from a patient's body and for filtering blood and recirculating blood back into the patient's body. Also described herein are obturators, including steerable obturators, that may be used with a rigidizing catheter or a non-rigidizing catheter.
Claims33
A blood clot aspiration system, comprising:
- an aspiration fluid line configured to couple to an aspiration catheter to aspirate blood from a patient's vasculature;
- a clot capture chamber configured to receive the aspirated blood from the aspiration fluid line;
- a reservoir configured to receive blood from the clot capture chamber, wherein the reservoir includes a filter;
- a blood return input configured to inject filtered blood from the reservoir into the patient's vasculature;
- a venting line that is parallel to the aspiration fluid line, clot capture chamber and reservoir, wherein the venting line is fluidly coupled to the reservoir, the clot capture chamber and the blood return input;
- and
- a vent release on the blood return input, wherein the vent release comprises a user-activated vent to release a pressure among the clot capture chamber and the reservoir to an external atmosphere.
A method for removing clot material, the method comprising:
- aspirating blood and blood clot material from a patient's vasculature using an aspiration catheter and receiving the aspirated blood and clot material in a clot capture chamber;
- receiving blood from the clot capture chamber within a reservoir from an aspiration fluid line, wherein the reservoir includes a filter that is configured to filter the blood received from the clot capture chamber;
- receiving filtered blood from the reservoir into a blood return input for return into the patient's vasculature;
- and
- operating a vent release control to open a vent release on a venting line that is parallel to the aspiration fluid line between the clot capture chamber and reservoir to release vacuum in the aspiration fluid line or clot capture chamber, wherein a vent release control is on the blood return input.
A steerable obturator device, the device comprising:
- an elongate obturator body having a distal bending section and a proximal elongate body region;
- a guidewire lumen extending through the elongate obturator body;
- a distal tip region comprising a low-durometer material;
- a pullwire extending through a second lumen of the elongate obturator body and terminating between the distal tip region and the elongate obturator body;
- and
- a spring guide within the second lumen and surrounding a portion of the pullwire extending from a proximal end of the bending section to a proximal end of the elongate obturator body.

An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:
- a rigidizing catheter comprising a rigidizing layer and a bladder layer, further wherein the rigidizing catheter is configured to convert from the flexible state to a rigid state by the application of positive and/or negative pressure to drive the bladder layer against the rigidizing layer to limit shearing of the rigidizing layer;
- and
- a steerable obturator configured to fit within a lumen of the rigidizing catheter.
