Sub-primal cut identification and packaging optimization system and method

A system for optimizing processing of a workpiece, the system comprising:

• a first scanner;
• a second scanner;
• and
• an computing device having one or more processors and a non-transitory computer-readable medium;
• wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium has instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the one or more processors, cause the computing device to perform actions comprising:
• receiving, by the computing device from the first scanner, a first scan of the workpiece showing a first match characteristic;
• receiving, by the computing device from the second scanner, a second scan of the workpiece showing a second match characteristic;
• identifying, by the computing device, a plurality of attribute characteristics for the workpiece using at least one of the first scan and the second scan;
• for each model of a plurality of models, wherein each model is associated with a workpiece type, wherein each model includes at least a first reference shape for detection of the first match characteristic and a second reference shape for detection of the second match characteristic, and wherein each model includes a plurality of attribute characteristic value ranges:
• concurrently aligning the first reference shape of the model to the first match characteristic of the first scan and the second reference shape of the model to the second match characteristic of the second scan;
• and
• calculating a plurality of shape match values based on the alignment of the first and second match characteristics with the first and second reference shapes;
• calculating a plurality of attribute match values based on the identified plurality of attribute characteristics compared to the attribute characteristic value ranges;
• determining a best model match using the plurality of attribute match values and the plurality of shape match values;
• and
• assigning a workpiece type to the workpiece based on the best model match.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by one or more processors of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform actions for optimizing processing of a workpiece, the actions comprising:

• receiving, by the computing device, a first scan of the workpiece showing a first match characteristic and a second scan of the workpiece showing a second match characteristic;
• identifying, by the computing device, a plurality of attribute characteristics for the workpiece using at least one of the first scan and the second scan;
• for each model of a plurality of models, wherein each model is associated with a workpiece type, wherein each model includes at least a first reference shape for detection of the first match characteristic and a second reference shape for detection of the second match characteristic, and wherein each model includes a plurality of attribute characteristic value ranges:
• concurrently aligning the first reference shape of the model to the first match characteristic of the first scan and the second reference shape of the model to the second match characteristic of the second scan;
• and
• calculating a plurality of shape match values based on the alignment of the first and second match characteristics with the first and second reference shapes;
• calculating a plurality of attribute match values based on the identified plurality of attribute characteristics compared to the attribute characteristic value ranges;
• determining a best model match using the plurality of attribute match values and the plurality of shape match values;
• and
• assigning a workpiece type to the workpiece based on the best model match.
