A motor drive utilizes an initial commissioning run to determine torque at a desired location along a drivetrain in real-time using an initial commissioning reference signal. Subsequent reference signals, corresponding to a desired operation of the motor after commissioning, are received at the motor drive. An output current from the motor drive is generated to control operation of the motor responsive to the subsequent reference signal. The output current from the motor drive is measured as it is supplied to the motor while executing the subsequent reference signal. An electromagnetic torque for the motor is determined using the motor drive as a function of the output current measured while executing the subsequent reference signal. The torque is determined at the location along the drivetrain while executing the subsequent reference signal as a function of the electromagnetic torque and of the torque determined at the location during the commissioning run.
