Abstract
The volume change of liquid and solid gallium has been studied as a function of pressure and temperature up to 3.02 GPa at 300 K and up to 3.63 GPa at 330 K using synchrotron x-ray microtomography combined with energy dispersive x-ray diffraction techniques. Two sets of directly measured P-V data at 300 K and 330 K were obtained from 3D tomography reconstruction data, and the corresponding isothermal bulk moduli were determined as 23.6 (0.5) GPa and 24.6 (0.4) GPa, respectively. The existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition region is proposed based on the abnormal compressibility of Ga melt at about 2.44 GPa and 330 K conditions.

A method of generating a gas bubble implosion comprising:
- (a) providing a rigid structural container, completely filled with a liquid metal and sealed, wherein the rigid structural container is made of a material substantially inert with respect to the liquid metal and has an injection port for introduction of a small controlled 0.1 to 10 mm diameter gas bubble of controlled composition;
- (b) introducing said 0.1 to 10 mm diameter gas bubble of controlled composition to float suspended in the liquid metal in the rigid structural container;
- (c) subjecting said container containing the liquid metal and the introduced gas bubble to an external shock produced by dropping, mechanical pistons or magnetic pulse whereby the internal bubble is collapsed by the liquid shockwave producing high internal bubble pressure and temperature.
An apparatus for generating a gas bubble implosion comprising:
- (a) a rigid structural container, completely filled with a liquid metal and sealed, wherein the rigid structural container is made of a material substantially inert with respect to the liquid metal and has an injection port for introduction of a small controlled 0.1 to 10 mm diameter gas bubble of controlled composition in the liquid metal;
- (b) a gas feeder introducing said 0.1 to 10 mm diameter gas bubble of controlled composition to float suspended as an internal bubble in the liquid metal in the rigid structural container;
- (c) wherein the rigid structural container is constructed and arranged to provide an external shock produced by dropping, or is provided with one or more mechanical pistons operative provide an external shock or is wired and configured to provide an external shock by way of a magnetic pulse whereby the internal bubble is collapsed by the liquid shockwave producing high internal bubble pressure and temperature.
