A system and method for autonomous robot localization using text-annotated three-dimensional landmarks in warehouse and industrial environments. A camera captures images containing shelf labels, corridor signs, and other existing textual markers. An OCR module detects and extracts textual content from images. A 3D sensing subsystem captures spatial data using techniques including LIDAR, stereo vision, depth sensors, or monocular depth estimation. A data association module correlates detected text with 3D positions, optionally extracting surface orientation information to constrain robot heading. Detected text, associated 3D positions, and optional surface normals are stored as landmarks in a database. A localization module queries the database to match observed text with known landmarks, computes robot pose from landmark positions, and enables global localization, automatic initialization after reboot, and drift correction. Integration with continuous localization methods provides robust, drift-corrected pose estimation. Multi-robot fleets collaboratively build and maintain shared landmark maps. The system integrates with warehouse management systems by using human-readable label identifiers for task specification.
