Abstract
A method of fabricating a compound light-guide optical element (LOE) is provided. A bonded stack of a plurality of LOE precursors and a plurality of transparent spacer plates alternating therebetween is bonded to a first optical block having a plurality of mutually parallel obliquely angled internal surfaces. The block is joined to the stack such that first plurality of partially reflective internal surfaces of the block is non-parallel to the internal surfaces of the LOE precursor. After bonding, a second optical is thereby formed. At least one compound LOE is sliced-out of the second optical block by cutting the second block through at least two consecutive spacer plates having a LOE precursor sandwiched therebetween.
Claims7
An intermediate work product comprising a compound block that is sliceable along a set of parallel slicing planes to generate a plurality of lightguide optical elements (LOEs), said compound block comprising:
- (a) a stack including a plurality of LOE precursors, each of said LOE precursors having two mutually parallel major surfaces and a first set of mutually parallel partially reflecting internal surfaces obliquely inclined to said major surfaces, said stack having a planar stack face perpendicular to said major surfaces of said LOE precursors;
- (b) an optical block containing a second set of mutually parallel partially reflecting surfaces, said optical block having a first planar block face that is optically bonded, directly or via an intermediate optical element, to said stack face with said second set of partially reflecting surfaces non-parallel to said second set of partially reflecting surfaces, said optical block further having a second planar block face;
- and
- (c) a transparent prism having first and second prism faces, said first prism face being coplanar with said first block face and being optically bonded, directly or via an intermediate optical element, to said stack face, said second prism face being optically bonded to said second block face,
- such that slicing of said compound block along a set of slicing planes parallel to said major surfaces generates a plurality of LOEs each including one of said LOE precursors, a portion of said optical block including a portion of said second set of partially reflecting surfaces and a portion of said transparent prism.
