Abstract
A timber-concrete composite floor or roof system connector that provides high slip modulus stiffness and resiliency through a combination of mechanical and adhesive connections to a timber substrate, ductile structural behavior under ultimate loading, and an integrated method for chair support of concrete slab reinforcing members during wet concrete placement; and methods of making and using same.

A method, comprising:
- causing a base plate and a timber substrate to be positioned within a building being constructed such that the base plate is attached to the timber substrate, the base plate is rigidly connected to the timber substrate, and the base plate extends along a longitudinal direction, wherein the base plate has a first plane;
- and
- causing a top bar comprising a module to be positioned within the building being constructed such that the module is configured to yield under an ultimate horizontal shear load applied in the longitudinal direction and experience a linear or effectively linear plastic deformation under the ultimate horizontal shear load while the base plate and the timber substrate remain elastic, wherein the top bar extends along the longitudinal direction with the module located on a second plane generally perpendicular to the first plane, wherein the module comprises a plurality of legs inclined toward each other relative to the longitudinal direction and having a generally horizontal segment between the plurality of legs.
A method, comprising:
- operating a building after:
- a connector comprising a base plate attached to a timber substrate and a top bar comprising a module is installed within the building such that the base plate is rigidly connected to the timber substrate and the base plate extends along a longitudinal direction, wherein the base plate has a first plane, wherein the module is configured to yield under an ultimate horizontal shear load applied in the longitudinal direction and experience a linear or effectively linear plastic deformation under the ultimate horizontal shear load while the base plate and the timber substrate remain elastic, wherein the top bar extends along the longitudinal direction with the module located on a second plane generally perpendicular to the first plane, wherein the module comprises a plurality of legs inclined toward each other relative to the longitudinal direction and having a generally horizontal segment between the plurality of legs.
A method, comprising:
- supplying a connector comprising a base plate and a top bar comprising a module to a builder such that the builder builds a building by at least:
- attaching the connector to a timber substrate such that the base plate is rigidly connected to the timber substrate and the base plate extends along a longitudinal direction, wherein the base plate has a first plane, wherein the connector is attached to the timber substrate such that the module is configured to yield under an ultimate horizontal shear load applied in the longitudinal direction and experience a linear or effectively linear plastic deformation under the ultimate horizontal shear load while the base plate and the timber substrate remain elastic, wherein the top bar extends along the longitudinal direction with the module located on a second plane generally perpendicular to the first plane, wherein the module comprises a plurality of legs inclined toward each other relative to the longitudinal direction and having a generally horizontal segment between the plurality of legs.
A method of forming a timber-concrete composite structure, the method comprising:
- providing a timber-concrete composite connector comprising (a) a base plate which has a plane and is attachable to a timber substrate to achieve a rigid connection with the timber substrate, wherein the base plate extending along a longitudinal direction, and (b) a top bar comprising a module that is designed to yield under an ultimate horizontal shear load applied in the longitudinal direction and experience a linear or effectively linear plastic deformation under the ultimate horizontal shear load while the base plate and the timber substrate remain elastic, wherein the top bar extends along the longitudinal direction with the module being located on an effective plane which is perpendicular to the plane, wherein the module (a) has two inclined legs, which are relatively straight segments that are inclined toward each other relative to the longitudinal direction, and (b) has a relatively horizontal segment between the two inclined legs;
- attaching the timber-concrete composite connector to a timber substrate;
- and
- forming a concrete slab on the timber substrate such that the timber-concrete composite connector is embedded in the concrete slab.
