Abstract
An example method of hydrolyzing cellulose includes: providing cellulose to be hydrolyzed; applying a stabilizing salt to the cellulose to form a reaction mixture, the stabilizing salt configured to suppress recrystallization of amorphous cellulose in the reaction mixture; and hydrolyzing the amorphous cellulose in the presence of the stabilizing salt to suppress recrystallization of the amorphous cellulose in the reaction mixture during hydrolysis.

A method of hydrolyzing cellulose, the method comprising:
- providing cellulose to be hydrolyzed;
- applying a stabilizing salt to the cellulose to form a reaction mixture, the stabilizing salt configured to suppress recrystallization of amorphous cellulose in the reaction mixture;
- and
- hydrolyzing the amorphous cellulose to obtain fermentable sugars, wherein hydrolysis occurs in the presence of the stabilizing salt to suppress recrystallization of the amorphous cellulose in the reaction mixture during the hydrolysis.
