Abstract
Asphalt compositions comprising a phenolic lipid-based compatibilizer are provided. The phenolic lipid-based compatibilizer provides improved low temperature adhesion performance (i.e., at 40° F. or below) to the asphalt composition, which is particularly useful in roofing applications, such as asphalt-based shingles and underlayments.
Claims20
An asphalt composition comprising:
- a modified asphalt material, the modified asphalt material comprising:
- from 10 to 99 wt. % of a base asphalt, based upon the total weight of the modified asphalt material;
- and
- from 1 to 20 wt. % of a phenolic lipid-based compatibilizer, based upon the total weight of the modified asphalt material,
- wherein the asphalt composition exhibits an improved adhesion at temperatures of 40° F. or lower as compared to an otherwise identical asphalt composition devoid of the phenolic lipid-based compatibilizer.
